About Us
The Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association (BPBA) is a registered environmental charity dedicated to protecting the Peninsula’s unique biodiversity, promoting sustainable community development, and inspiring people to connect with nature. We deliver conservation projects, environmental education, and community initiatives that help ensure the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula remains a healthy and vibrant place for generations to come.

Key Responsibilities

As a member of the Board of Directors, the Treasurer is a volunteer position, and you will be part of the Executive Committee of the Board which includes the Chair (Victoria Lant), Vice Chair (John Rodgers) and Secretary (Pat Sein). You will advise the Board on all aspects of the Association’s financial management. The Treasurer's goal is to guide the Board in managing financial resources efficiently and effectively, in line with legal requirements, grant deliverables and best business practices. The BPBA has an annual budget of approximately $500,000.  Paid staff include one full time Office Manager, a part-time Finance Manager, a part-time Environmental Network Co-ordinator and 3 - 6 summer students. There are currently 11 Board Members and their background information is on the website BPBA.ca under About Us, Directors and Staff.  Each Board Member brings a unique skill set and expertise to the Board and each are proud to volunteer for an organization that makes a real difference and has an excellent track record of success.

The Treasurer is to maintain a good understanding of Association overall goals and resources needed to achieve them, and work with the Finance Manager and Office Manager (both paid positions) to create a detailed financial plan plus work with an external auditor on the yearly financial statements.

The Treasurer reviews reports from the Office Manager and Finance Manager to monitor the Association’s financial health including, capital reserves, projected cashflow, budget and tracking of expenditures to approved budget.

Thus, the Treasurer must be familiar with the financial obligations and risks of the Association’s grants and proposed grants, and be satisfied that plans to meet them are realistic (e.g. what if ALL grants applied for are approved; will the Association have the capacity to deliver?).

Key Activities

Monthly

- reviewing the detailed project report and noting and clarifying any transactions of concern and any significant variances

- attending Board of Directors meetings in person or virtually

- reviewing recommendations of Office Manager and Bookkeeper related to GIC investments to ensure cash is adequate for upcoming expenditures, but also invested as fully as possible.

If during a monthly review of project report,  material variances are identified, the Treasurer would work with the Office Manager to bring recommendations to the Board to address them

Quarterly

- reviewing and clarifying (if required) the cashflow for next quarter and to year end provided by Office Manager to determine its adequacy

Yearly

- participate in annual budget preparation and the quarterly review with Office Manager and Board Leads

- as Lead of the Board’s Audit Committee, working with the Auditor and Office Manager to ensure the audit is completed on a timely basis for presentation at the Annual General Meeting

- reviewing legal filings such as CRA Charitable Return for consistency with good business practice and on time submission

- reviewing financial policies and procedures and banking arrangements to ensure they are up to date and reflect best business practices and financial yields to the Association

- review proposed major fundraising events to identify potential risks and ensure that plans for mitigation exist.
